Sinatra: An icon and a drawing challenge

Durante uno de mis talleres de dibujo conversábamos sobre la importancia de la silueta en la caricatura. Incluso revisamos ejemplos de colegas brasileños donde esta estética es especialmente evidente. El reto, por supuesto, es mantener el parecido; y después de estudiar cómo abordar un personaje, suelo usar la expresión “romper con el retrato”, porque ese es siempre uno de los grandes desafíos para quienes hacemos caricatura.

Ayer recibí un mensaje de mi amigo, el gran humorista Carlos Sicilia, que me recordaba la importancia de trabajar con referencias más icónicas, más cercanas a la imagen que el público tiene del personaje. En este caso, yo había elegido una fotografía de un Sinatra muy joven, antes de convertirse en La Voz, y a veces uno olvida ese detalle. Por eso incluyo aquí una pequeña reseña visual del gran Frank Sinatra, conectando ese rostro temprano con la figura legendaria que todos reconocemos.

During one of my drawing workshops we were discussing the importance of silhouette in caricature. We even looked at examples from Brazilian colleagues where this aesthetic becomes especially striking. The challenge, of course, is keeping the likeness; and after studying how to approach a character, I often use the expression “breaking away from the portrait”, because that’s one of the great challenges for those of us who work in caricature.

Yesterday I received a message from my friend, the great humorist Carlos Sicilia, reminding me of the importance of choosing a more iconic reference — one that matches the image the audience already has of the character. In this case, I had chosen a photograph of a very young Sinatra, before he became The Voice, and it’s easy to forget how much that matters. That’s why I’m including here a small visual note on the great Frank Sinatra, linking that early face to the legendary figure we all recognize.
