Estudio en acuarela: Keith Richards — ¿Por qué el boceto previo?

La víspera de un taller siempre me lleva de vuelta al papel. Me hacía falta retomar la acuarela después de un período de dibujo y construcción.

En este caso, y siguiendo el tema musical, el modelo es una imagen de Keith Richards en los años 70. El ejercicio consistía en hacerlo directamente sobre el papel, sin boceto previo… a veces sale bien y otras veces, menos bien. De hecho, hice algunas correcciones ya con la acuarela, aunque no siempre es posible.

Les cuento un secreto: muy conforme no quedé, pero en estos casos se firma y se pone la fecha. Luego toca demostrar por qué el proceso de estudio previo es efectivo y cómo siempre se puede hacer mejor. El límite lo pones tú en tu cabeza. De allí la importancia de los bocetos previos: son las herramientas que nos permiten “subir a escena”. Es lo que el solfeo, la práctica y el estudio representan para un buen jam de un músico que, con su improvisación, conecta con el público.

The day before a workshop always brings me back to paper. I needed to return to watercolor after a period focused on drawing and construction.

In this case—still within the musical theme—the model is a 1970s image of Keith Richards. The exercise was to paint directly on the paper with no preliminary sketch… sometimes it works beautifully, and other times, less so. I even made a few corrections with watercolor itself, though that isn’t always possible.

Here’s a small confession: I wasn’t entirely satisfied with it, but in these situations you sign it and date it. Afterwards comes the moment to show why prior study is so effective, and how things can always be improved. The only real limit is the one you set in your own head. That’s why preliminary sketches matter: they give us the tools to “step on stage”. It’s the same role that practice, study and musical training play in a good jam session, when a musician connects with the audience through improvisation.
